Jah9 invades Sebastopol, California

One of the most exciting new artists coming out of Jamaica right now is a captivating young woman who goes by Jah9.  She was one of the most celebrated acts at Reggae on the River 2014; her songs are becoming more popular in the dancehalls in several countries and on Spotify playlists worldwide.  I was fortunate to catch her live performance at WBLK Monday Night Edutainment at Hopmonk Tavern Sebastopol this week.  I now see why she is gaining popularity quickly.

As a practicing Rastafarian woman, she brought a message of truth, unity and “I-tal”

As a practicing Rastafarian woman, she brought a message of truth, unity and “I-tal” (natural) living, moving me with her words several times during her performance. She also brought with her some homemade bamboo Calabash “steamer” chalices, encouraging a method of smoking practiced in her country.

DJ Guacamole had his large, speaker-ridden avocado on stage, which was a perfect prop for Jah9, as one of her most popular songs is entitle “Avocado”.  DJ Jacques held it down on the 1's & 2's, backing Jah9 throughout her set and selecting some crucial tunes before and after.

As usual, the WBLK Monday Night Edutainment at Hopmonk Sebastopol exposed Sonoma County to yet another talented artist, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that is excited for her return some day.
