SM Familia CD release party
Next: An evening with No Kings
They definitely brought the dub to OB that night, and even Maxi Priest joined in to sing a song with them
While Top Shelf Reggae was checking out Maxi Priest at Winston’s Beach Club in Ocean Beach, San Diego, it was also reggae night at Club Kingston, a night dedicated to showcasing local reggae music! SM Familia happened to be having their CD release party that night, and had originally asked us to check them after we had just finished checking The Green in Solana Beach! So, after the Maxi Priest listening session party, we stayed to check out local music, including the band Simmer Down Riddim Section.
Simmer Down Riddim Section is a self-proclaimed “Roots rub-a-dub” reggae band. They definitely brought the dub to OB that night, and even Maxi Priest joined in to sing a song with them; especially after they performed, “Reggae International.” After that, a guest beatboxer (and student of music) took the stage to perform. It was actually so unique that Maxi Priest performed with him because he was digging this guy’s talent!
SM Familia closed the night with their Latin, funk, and reggae music. The band also consisted of horns, keys, and percussion to bring reggae music to their Latin vibes and cumbias. Although their music had great energy and their sections sounded great, it was a little too Latin with barely any reggae- which is great because this writer knows her Latin music too, but was expecting more REGGAE music! All-in-all, though, SM Familia has a great sound for those cumbia lovers!
